Beginnings of “The Valley”

“The Valley” has its roots in the well-known Swiss start-up of Julius Maggi, a pioneer in food and flavour production. In 1861, aged just 23, Julius Maggi took over the hammer mill in Kemptthal from his father. 11 years later, he founded J. Maggi & Cie. Another five years later, the world-famous invention Maggi seasoning was launched on the market. With a love of food production and a comprehensive understanding of marketing, he led an internationally successful company until his death in 1912. The company was then taken over by Nestlé and later continued by Givaudan. The charming brick buildings, silent witnesses to Switzerland’s industrial heyday in the 19th and early 20th centuries, are not only immortalised in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites, but are also lovingly cared for by the cantonal heritage authorities.

The site today

The redesign of the area creates space for those who want to write their own success story. In this inspiring environment, Givaudan, the world’s leading fragrance and flavour company, has decided to close its production facility in Kemptthal and instead establish its new global centre for research and development. The southern part of the site is now home to a modern research laboratory and a building for office and administrative purposes, which has provided space for some 450 highly qualified employees since 2019.

Welcome to the future

With the aim of breathing new life, new plans and new visions into the area, the historic buildings were modernised and supplemented with new buildings in keeping with the site’s industrial charm. The result is an innovative district for all sectors. With additional leisure facilities and meeting places, “The Valley” is home to a creative mix of over 120 individual companies working side by side, creating a stimulating atmosphere that really gets synergies flowing.

Welcome to a bustling community that combines tradition and innovation in its own unique way.
